Robert Lewandowski has confirmed he will leave Barcelona at the end of the season, potentially paving the way for Marcus Rashford to secure a permanent £26m transfer from Manchester United.

The 37-year-old striker will depart the Catalan club when his contract expires in June following four highly successful years.

His impending exit creates a significant attacking vacancy at the Camp Nou, which could ultimately benefit the England international’s hopes of remaining in Spain.

Rashford has impressed during his loan spell with the Spanish champions, registering 14 goals and 11 assists predominantly from the left flank.

End of an era at the Camp Nou

Lewandowski announced his decision via social media on Saturday and will bid farewell to supporters against Real Betis on Sunday.

The Poland captain leaves an impressive legacy in Catalonia, having scored 119 goals in 191 appearances since his £43m arrival from Bayern Munich in 2022.

He helped guide Hansi Flick’s side to three La Liga titles during his tenure and played a pivotal role in the club’s post-Lionel Messi transition.

“After four years full of challenges and hard work, it’s time to move on. I leave with the feeling that the mission is complete.”

“Catalonia is my place on earth. Thank you to everyone I met along the way during these beautiful four years,” the former Bayern forward added.

Rashford’s future hangs in the balance

Barcelona possess an option to buy the Manchester United loanee permanently when the summer transfer window opens.

While the club intend to sign a traditional centre-forward this summer, the versatile attacker has proven he can adequately fill the goalscoring void.

Flick’s recruitment team are also reportedly monitoring Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez and Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic.

Meanwhile, Lewandowski is not planning to retire and is currently weighing up several lucrative offers to extend his storied career.

Major League Soccer franchise Chicago Fire, Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Hilal, and Italian giants Juventus have all registered their interest in the veteran marksman.
