Sam Kerr joins Gotham FC on four-year deal after Chelsea exit
Australian striker Sam Kerr has joined National Women’s Soccer League side Gotham FC on a four-year deal following her departure from Chelsea.
The 32-year-old, who leaves London as the Blues’ joint all-time top scorer, announced her exit in May at the end of her expiring contract.
She netted an impressive 116 times in 158 appearances during her time in England, famously securing the winning goal in her final match against Manchester United.
A return to familiar surroundings
“I’m incredibly excited to return to Gotham FC and to this city,” said Kerr.
“This club was an important part of my journey, and to come back at this moment, with everything Gotham has built, is really special.”
The prolific forward previously represented the New Jersey-based outfit between 2015 and 2017, back when the franchise operated under the name Sky Blue.
“The ambition here is clear, and I’m looking forward to helping this team compete for trophies and create more history,” she added.
Cementing a legacy in London and beyond
Arriving with superstar billing from the Chicago Red Stars in January 2020, her initial transfer was widely recognised as the most significant acquisition in Women’s Super League history.
The Australian international fully justified that reputation under former manager Emma Hayes, driving her team to five WSL titles, three FA Cups, and three League Cups.
Despite departing the United States over half a decade ago, she astonishingly remains the all-time leading goalscorer in NWSL history.
The clinical finisher claimed the US Golden Boot for three consecutive seasons, setting a benchmark of 18 goals that stood until Temwa Chawinga tallied 21 in 2024.
Overcoming adversity and a lengthy absence
Her unquestionable status as Chelsea’s talisman was abruptly paused when she suffered a devastating anterior cruciate ligament injury in January 2024.
A grueling 18-month rehabilitation process meant she only returned to full fitness in the latter stages of the most recent campaign, coinciding with a rare faltering of Chelsea’s title credentials.
Away from the pitch, her lengthy period of recovery brought joyous personal milestones, as she married former West Ham midfielder Kristie Mewis before welcoming their son in May last year.
