South Africa’s progression to the World Cup knockout stages was overshadowed by a tense mixed zone altercation with South Korea players over loud post-match celebrations.

The African side secured a 1-0 victory thanks to Thapelo Maseko’s goal to leapfrog their opponents in the group standings.

However, the jubilant scenes spilt over into the media area and disrupted post-match interviews being conducted by the defeated squad.

Hwang demands respect during celebrations

The victorious squad reportedly pushed through the mixed zone singing loudly, which drowned out ongoing press duties.

When reporters and national team officials requested quiet, a South African representative allegedly responded with a confrontational attitude.

Feyenoord midfielder Hwang In-beom subsequently confronted the official to demand quiet.

“Hurry up and move. Please show some respect,” Hwang shouted.

Fifa media personnel and South Korean staff were forced to step in to de-escalate the rising tensions.

South Korea wait on qualification hopes

Following the defeat, the Asian nation must now wait to see if they advance to the knockout phases as one of the best third-placed finishers.

Hwang eventually returned to his media duties to reflect on a damaging defeat for his country.

“Ultimately, we lost because we weren’t good enough, and if we are given another opportunity, we will need to approach it with more desperation,” he said.

Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Hwang Hee-chan also expressed regret over missed opportunities during the narrow loss.

“Personally, I feel a great sense of regret that I couldn’t capitalise on various chances or produce a result from the front,” he admitted.

Son apologises for lack of impact

Veteran forward Son Heung-min started the crucial fixture on the bench and was unable to influence proceedings after being introduced in the second half.

The 147-cap international subsequently issued an apology to his colleagues for his subdued performance.

“It’s so frustrating that the match didn’t go the way we wanted it to, and we as players are obviously very disappointed,” Son said.
“I feel sorry to my teammates that I didn’t give them much help on the pitch,” he added.
