Spain face midfield concerns ahead of World Cup tie against Austria
Spain have advanced to the World Cup round of 32 as Group H winners, but unconvincing performances have raised doubts over coach Luis de la Fuente’s midfield setup ahead of Thursday’s clash with Austria in Los Angeles.
The reigning European champions are departing their base camp in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to embark on a challenging knockout route across the United States.
Despite topping a group containing Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay, the team’s tactical fluency has been heavily scrutinised.
Midfield struggles under the spotlight
The nation’s modern footballing identity has historically relied on midfield dominance, yet their current trio has failed to click during the tournament.
Barcelona playmaker Pedri has been deployed in an advanced role, which has forced Paris St-Germain’s Fabián Ruiz out of the starting lineup.
“We take it completely naturally and are ready to help the team, whatever the boss decides,” Fabián Ruiz explained.
“I don’t think anything changes in midfield; each player has different characteristics but collectively, the idea is the same.”
Rodri criticism and tactical adjustments
Ballon d’Or winner Rodri has faced rare media criticism back home for appearing uncharacteristically sluggish in possession.
While the Manchester City anchorman completed 328 passes in the group stage with an impressive 93.7% accuracy, only 11.9% of those were progressive.
This forward-passing metric falls significantly behind rival midfielders such as Portugal’s Vitinha and Switzerland’s Granit Xhaka.
“It was a difficult match, it was almost impossible to string three or four passes together,” Luis de la Fuente noted following the Uruguay fixture.
The squad will now relocate to Long Beach, California, as they prepare for a high-stakes encounter against the Austrians.
A potential route to the final would see the European giants forced to travel back and forth between Los Angeles and Dallas over the coming weeks.
