Sunderland reject Chelsea transfer bid to keep captain Granit Xhaka
Captain Granit Xhaka will remain at Sunderland for the upcoming season after the club rejected an £8m bid from Chelsea for the midfielder.
The 33-year-old was initially open to exploring a move to Stamford Bridge to reunite with his former Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso.
However, following positive discussions with the Stadium of Light hierarchy, the Switzerland international has reaffirmed his commitment to the North East side.
European football proves decisive
The Black Cats enjoyed an impressive first campaign back in the Premier League last year, successfully securing Europa League qualification.
The opportunity to lead the team in continental competition was understood to be a major factor in the veteran’s decision to stay.
Sunderland’s long-term ambitions and the player’s strong connection with the club’s supporters also convinced him to abandon thoughts of a London transfer.
Key figure on Wearside
The former Arsenal man was instrumental in establishing his current employers as a formidable top-flight force last season.
Club officials always maintained their influential captain was not for sale despite the serious interest from the Blues.
He still has two years remaining on his current contract after arriving on Wearside for £13m last summer.
