Trabzonspor sign Mohamed Salah in remarkable Turkish transfer coup
Mohamed Salah has signed a two-year contract with Turkish side Trabzonspor, rejecting lucrative moves to Saudi Arabia and the United States to join the Black Sea club.
The Egyptian international was officially unveiled in front of 35,000 passionate supporters at the Papara Park stadium.
Club president Ertugrul Dogan spearheaded the ambitious move to bring the former Liverpool forward to the Turkish Super Lig.
Many had expected the iconic attacker to head to the Middle East or Major League Soccer following his departure from Anfield.
However, the Black Sea Storm managed to orchestrate one of the most surprising acquisitions of the summer transfer window.
Persuading a global superstar
Securing a player of such magnitude without the immediate lure of Champions League football required a unique sales pitch.
Trabzonspor have only won the Turkish league title once since their golden era in the early 1980s, claiming the crown in the 2021-22 season.
Dogan leaned heavily on the intense local football culture to convince the prolific winger to relocate to the north-east corner of Turkey.
“Salah asked us something like, ‘Why should I choose Trabzonspor now?'”
“We told him about the city and said: ‘You can be sure you will meet a group of supporters unlike any you have experienced before’.”
The charismatic club president also highlighted the profound cultural impact of bringing such an influential Muslim role model to the country.
Building a new legacy in Turkey
Under Dogan’s leadership, the club has recorded consistent top-half finishes, placing third, seventh, and third over recent campaigns.
They also lifted the Turkish Cup last season under the guidance of head coach Fatih Tekke.
Tekke is currently attempting to navigate his squad into the Europa League proper, though they trail Hungarian side Ferencvaros 1-0 after their play-off first leg.
The addition of the lightning-fast attacker is intended to elevate the squad’s profile and mentor the next generation of talent.
“We are working to make Trabzonspor and Trabzon itself a destination for talented young players from all over the world.”
“Mohamed Salah is a really great example in this respect.”
The sheer adoration displayed during his signing ceremony suggests the veteran forward has already found a welcoming new home on the Black Sea coast.
