United States face Bosnia in World Cup knockouts after topping group
The United States men’s national team will face Bosnia-Herzegovina in the World Cup round of 32 after an impressive group stage campaign on home soil.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side finished top of their group despite a rotated squad suffering a narrow 3-2 defeat to Türkiye in their final match.
The tournament hosts had already secured qualification following consecutive victories over Paraguay and Australia.
Excitement is steadily growing across the nation as the expanded 48-team tournament enters the knockout phases.
Attacking intent sparks national optimism
A thrilling 4-1 opening victory against Paraguay immediately showcased the American squad’s offensive capabilities.
Folarin Balogun scored twice in that fixture, complemented by a spectacular strike from Gio Reyna and an own goal.
A more measured 2-0 win over the Socceroos followed, a result achieved even without injured talisman Christian Pulisic.
Former England international Phil Neville believes the host nation are currently among the best performing sides at the tournament.
“What we’ve seen is they’ve probably been in the top three or four best teams in the World Cup so far in terms of tactical system, enjoyment, style of play, quality,” said Neville.
Breaking the quarter-final barrier
The Stars and Stripes have not advanced past the quarter-finals of the global showpiece in the modern era.
Their most successful recent run ended at that stage in 2002 against Germany, while the 2014 and 2022 campaigns concluded in the round of 16.
Nick Cushing, manager of National Women’s Soccer League side Denver Summit, highlighted the high-pressing tactical evolution under Pochettino.
“The team has started on the front foot; they want to play really attacking, intentional football,” Cushing explained.
If they are to rewrite history, the American squad must first navigate past a dangerous Bosnian outfit to keep their tournament dreams alive.
