Iga Swiatek reaches Cincinnati Open semi-finals after Rybakina injury
Defending champion Iga Swiatek has advanced to the Cincinnati Open semi-finals after world number two Elena Rybakina was forced to retire with a left ankle injury during their quarter-final match.
The 27-year-old was trailing 4-1 in the opening set when she required a medical timeout to receive treatment from trainers on the court.
Moments later, the match was abandoned, abruptly ending her hopes of securing the world number one ranking this week.
Following top seed Aryna Sabalenka’s surprise defeat to Sara Bejlek, a run to the tournament final would have guaranteed the premier spot for the injured challenger.
Swiatek sets up Pegula clash
The premature conclusion means the title holder extends her impressive record in Ohio, having reached at least the last four in her previous four consecutive appearances.
“Not the way you want the match to end,” Swiatek said.
“She didn’t look good, obviously. Then she wanted treatment and I wasn’t sure if she was going to be back or not.”
“She is walking normally now. I felt really sorry for her but hopefully it’s nothing serious and she is going to be ready for the US Open.”
The progressing competitor will now face American world number three Jessica Pegula, who survived a spirited fightback from Amanda Anisimova to secure a hard-fought 6-4 2-6 7-6 (4) victory.
Cobolli reaches maiden Masters semi-final
In the men’s draw, seventh seed Flavio Cobolli overcame a difficult start to defeat local favourite Tommy Paul 2-6 6-3 6-4.
The victory secures the breakthrough player’s first appearance in an ATP Masters 1000 semi-final, where he will test himself against Arthur Fils.
The Frenchman comfortably booked his place in the last four after dismantling Argentina’s Thiago Agustin Tirante in straight sets, 6-3 6-2.
