Marie Bouzkova beats Emma Navarro to secure Nottingham Open title
Czech fourth seed Marie Bouzkova has overcome a first-set ankle injury to defeat Emma Navarro and claim the Nottingham Open, securing her first career grass-court singles title.
The 27-year-old required medical treatment twice but demonstrated remarkable resilience to seal a 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 6-2 victory over her American opponent.
It marks a second tournament triumph of the season for the Prague-born player, following her clay-court success at the Bogota Open in April.
This latest hard-fought victory takes her overall tally to four career singles titles on the WTA Tour.
Injury scares and crowd disruption
The final appeared to be slipping away from the eventual champion when she landed awkwardly on her right ankle late in the opening set.
Serving at 6-5 and trailing 0-30, a medical timeout was urgently called to heavily strap the affected joint.
She battled back to reach deuce upon resumption, only for proceedings to be halted again due to a lengthy medical emergency within the spectator stands.
Despite the highly fragmented rhythm, she edged a tense tie-breaker before the former world number eight levelled the match in a competitive second set.
An early break in the deciding set ultimately broke the American’s resistance, allowing the Czech star to comfortably serve out the championship.
An emotional on-court address saw the newly crowned champion wish her father a happy Father’s Day after he booked a late flight to witness the final in person.
