Nick Kyrgios receives provisional suspension after positive cocaine test
Nick Kyrgios has been provisionally suspended from tennis after testing positive for cocaine during the Mallorca Open in June.
The Australian submitted a sample on 22 June that was later found to contain benzoylecgonine, a known metabolite of the recreational drug.
The former world number 13 has been officially serving this provisional ban since 4 August.
Accepting responsibility for the doping violation
The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) confirmed the mandatory suspension, noting the player had the option to challenge the ruling.
“He could appeal against the provisional suspension but has not done so to date.”
Addressing the situation directly via an Instagram post, the 31-year-old openly admitted his culpability regarding the failed test.
“I made a huge mistake and take full responsibility for it.”
Recent fitness struggles and ongoing tour absence
Under the strict terms of this suspension, the controversial star cannot play, coach at, or even attend Grand Slams or any events sanctioned by the professional tours.
This ban compounds an already difficult period for the former Wimbledon finalist, who has managed to play just four singles matches this entire season.
He has struggled severely with complex knee and wrist injuries over the past few years, keeping him largely sidelined from elite competitive action.
His most recent tournament appearance came in the men’s doubles at Wimbledon, where he and partner Alexander Bublik suffered a disappointing first-round defeat.
