Roman Safiullin stuns Joao Fonseca to clear Djokovic’s Wimbledon path
Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca has been knocked out of Wimbledon in straight sets by qualifier Roman Safiullin, removing a major hurdle for Novak Djokovic in the fourth round.
The Russian qualifier, ranked 132nd in the world, delivered a commanding 6-3 6-3 6-3 victory over the 24th seed in just over two hours.
This unexpected result denies spectators a highly anticipated rematch between Fonseca and the Serbian veteran in the last 16.
Djokovic’s route to the second week
The 24-time Grand Slam champion will no longer face the prospect of meeting the South American prodigy.
The pair previously contested a five-set epic at last month’s French Open, where the young Brazilian famously fought back from two sets down to claim victory.
That shock defeat in Paris marked only the second time in Djokovic’s illustrious career that he had surrendered a two-set advantage.
Instead, the 37-year-old must first overcome Arthur Rinderknech on Centre Court this afternoon to secure his own progression.
Safiullin’s remarkable resilience
Meanwhile, the 28-year-old victor is enjoying an extraordinary grass-court campaign at the All England Club.
The former quarter-finalist navigated three grueling qualifying matches, including a five-set thriller against Jerome Kym, just to reach the main draw.
His physical endurance has been on full display, having already eliminated 12th seed Andrey Rublev and Botic van de Zandschulp.
Both of those earlier matches were decided by final-set tie-breaks, cementing the qualifier’s place in tournament history.
He is now the first player to win multiple deciding-set tie-breaks during the same year at Wimbledon.
Should Djokovic avoid an upset of his own against Rinderknech, his quest for a record 25th major title appears significantly less treacherous.
