The Cincinnati Bengals have restructured quarterback Joe Burrow’s contract to free up $10m in salary cap space following their trade for defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence II.

The adjustment to the two-time MVP finalist’s deal provides crucial financial flexibility for the franchise ahead of the new campaign.

Management could have cleared up to $19.2m by converting the star signal-caller’s entire base salary, but opted for a smaller restructure.

This financial manoeuvring was necessitated by the team possessing a mere $7.1m in effective cap room before the agreement.

Lawrence arrival sparks financial reshuffle

Cincinnati acquired Lawrence in a blockbuster pre-draft trade, sending the 10th overall pick to secure the elite interior defender.

That aggressive acquisition continues an uncharacteristically busy off-season for the organisation.

Duke Tobin, the team’s de facto general manager, had previously hinted at altering the landmark $275m extension signed by their franchise player in 2023.

We’ve layered in challenges, but we’re up to them, and we do it because we got the opportunity to add the right people and the right players.
Those are challenges that the locker room isn’t interested in; they’re interested in having the best team possible, and that’s what we’re trying to give them.

Playoff ambitions following injury-hit campaign

The AFC North side are desperate to return to the post-season for the first time since 2022.

Their starting quarterback missed nine games last year after sustaining a turf toe injury midway through the schedule.

A fully fit roster, bolstered by high-profile defensive additions, will be pivotal in navigating the highly competitive NFL landscape this season.
