Lando Norris accepts early 2026 struggles as price for McLaren title glory
Lando Norris admits McLaren’s troubled start to the 2026 Formula 1 season is the direct consequence of their intense effort to secure back-to-back world championships.
The defending world champion is preparing for his home race at the British Grand Prix amidst a highly challenging title defence.
Reliability issues and strategic errors have left the British driver fifth in the current standings, 92 points adrift of Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli.
“I’m happy I have the pain of this year for the glory of last,” Norris told BBC Sport.
The cost of championship glory
The Woking-based outfit did not anticipate such a difficult beginning to the new campaign.
However, the team acknowledges that fending off Max Verstappen and Red Bull last year required shifting crucial resources away from their 2026 car development.
“We still put a lot of effort into making sure we were ready for this year, and we’re not as ready and as strong as we would have liked to have been.”
“As soon as you’re just a little bit more focused on last season, especially in such a big transition of regulation, you pay the price pretty quickly.”
Reliability woes and missed opportunities
In terms of raw pace, the papaya cars have fluctuated between being the second and fourth fastest on the grid.
Their most significant missed opportunity came at the Miami Grand Prix, where a strategic blunder cost the McLaren driver a potential victory over Antonelli.
A combination of power-unit failures and operational mistakes has led to multiple costly retirements across the opening rounds.
“It’s been dreadful for one reason, reliability and issues, and that’s been the biggest letdown of the whole year.”
Maintaining confidence for Silverstone
Despite the severe setbacks, the reigning champion remains optimistic about extracting maximum performance from his current machinery.
He believes podium finishes are still entirely achievable if the team executes a perfect weekend.
Retaining his British Grand Prix crown at Silverstone will now require a flawless performance against the pace-setting Mercedes team.
