Machida Zelvia reach Asian Champions League final after VAR chaos
Japanese side Machida Zelvia have advanced to the Asian Champions League final after a controversial stoppage-time VAR decision sparked chaotic scenes against Shabab Al-Ahli.
The tournament debutants secured a narrow 1-0 semi-final victory in a dramatic conclusion that required referee Shaun Evans to be escorted off the pitch by police.
The Dubai-based outfit believed they had snatched a dramatic late equaliser through a superb solo effort from Guilherme Bala.
Unusual substitution infringement
However, the goal was dramatically chalked off following a lengthy video review for a highly unusual restart infringement.
Officials determined that the UAE Pro League side had taken a quick throw-in while their opponents were still in the process of completing a substitution.
The decision immediately ignited fury among the eliminated players, who aggressively surrounded the match official at the final whistle.
Sousa condemns technical mistake
Infuriated manager Paulo Sousa stormed down the tunnel in protest before the tense fixture had officially concluded.
Shabab goalkeeper Hamad Al-Meqbaali was subsequently shown a red card during the turbulent aftermath on the pitch.
There was a goal that was scored and then it was cancelled – this is a very technical mistake by the referee.
Unfortunately this is what is turning football into rubble. It was a big mistake to choose this referee for this match.
Historic final awaits debutants
The Japanese club will now continue their remarkable maiden continental campaign after surviving the late onslaught.
They are scheduled to face reigning champions Al-Ahli of Saudi Arabia in the showpiece final on 25 April.
