Spain manager Luis de la Fuente has fiercely defended midfielder Rodri against “insulting” criticism following their shock goalless draw with Cape Verde in their World Cup opener.

The reigning European champions endured a frustrating start to their campaign against the African nation, failing to break down a resolute defence.

Despite entering the tournament as heavy favourites, the Spanish attack struggled to find a breakthrough, leading to intense scrutiny from the media back home.

Manager blasts ‘insulting’ treatment

Much of the negative focus has centred on the Manchester City talisman, who was accused of slowing down his side’s attacking rhythm.

De la Fuente himself also faced domestic pressure over his tactical choices, particularly his decision to deploy Gavi and Ferran Torres in wide areas before delaying substitutions.

However, the head coach firmly rejected the narrative surrounding his star midfielder during an interview with Cadena COPE radio.

“It seems incredibly insulting to me that people would say that about the best player in the world.”
“Would people say that about others who are considered the best in the world? I think they wouldn’t dare.”

Ballon d’Or winner remains key

The highly decorated holding player secured the Ballon d’Or following his instrumental role in securing Euro 2024 glory for his country two years ago.

Recognising that pedigree, his international boss insisted the midfield anchor remains irreplaceable for the national setup.

“Even at 50%, he is better than most other midfielders in the world. He brings clarity, vision, balance. Rodri is an inspiration for us.”

Fitness concerns surround Yamal

Looking ahead to their next fixture, Spain must also manage the ongoing fitness issues surrounding Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal.

The teenage winger arrived at the tournament carrying a knock and was limited to a brief substitute appearance in the disappointing opening stalemate.

“We’ll assess it, whether it’s best for us for him to start, or whether to take advantage of the opponent’s tiredness in the final minutes, when Lamine is decisive.”

Despite the injury worries, the Spanish camp remains optimistic, drawing parallels to their successful European Championship campaign.

During that triumphant 2024 run, Dani Olmo arrived carrying an injury before eventually recovering to become the tournament’s joint-top scorer.
