Spain winger Yeremy Pino suffers suspected broken collarbone at World Cup
Spain winger Yeremy Pino could miss the remainder of the World Cup after suffering a suspected broken collarbone during Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Uruguay.
The Crystal Palace attacker fell awkwardly on his left shoulder following a late challenge in the closing stages of the final Group H fixture.
Despite appearing to be in considerable pain, the 22-year-old was forced to complete the match because La Roja had already utilised all of their permitted substitutions.
Head coach Luis de la Fuente, who introduced the forward as a 66th-minute substitute, admitted the initial medical assessment is highly concerning.
Awaiting medical confirmation
Medical staff will conduct further tests on Sunday to determine the full extent of the shoulder damage.
“It looks like Yeremy may have broken his collarbone,” said De la Fuente.
“Tomorrow they are going to do some tests and we will see how far the injury is.”
“The man is suffering a lot and the effort he has made is tremendous, possibly with a broken collarbone to hold on until the end of the match… It has been heroic and I am very grateful, like all his team-mates.”
Knockout stages beckon for Spain
A confirmed fracture would officially rule the agile wide player out for the rest of the tournament just as the critical knockout phases commence.
The Spanish national team successfully navigated their group campaign, topping the standings with seven points to secure their progression.
They will now travel to Los Angeles for a round-of-32 tie next Thursday, where they will face either Austria or Algeria.
